It’s not easy to detect,\u0026nbsp;since there is a second vocalist as well, and the typical\u0026nbsp;Udo characteristics\u0026nbsp;are missing: the texts are in English, not German; his typical vocal style is\u0026nbsp;absent. Even so the 1969 LP can be seen as evidence of his upcoming singing\u0026nbsp;career.\u0026nbsp;Lindenberg\u0026nbsp;had only recently arrived in Hamburg; musicians\u0026nbsp;knew him as a capable drummer.\u0026nbsp;Klaus Doldinger\u0026nbsp;needed a drummer who\u0026nbsp;could swing in 4\/4 as well as play rock beats for his band Passport, so he\u0026nbsp;grabbed\u0026nbsp;Udo. Newcomer\u0026nbsp;Lindenberg\u0026nbsp;hung out at the basement club, the\u0026nbsp;Jazzhouse, on Brandstwiete Street, cattycorner from the SPIEGEL building complex in Hamburg’s historic quarter. It was here that he ran into\u0026nbsp;trumpeter\u0026nbsp;Fred Christmann\u0026nbsp;and the American saxophonist\u0026nbsp;Frank St. Peter.\u0026nbsp;The three formed the group\u0026nbsp;Free Orbit. For the recording in the Jazzhouse\u0026nbsp;the band came out with nine musicians, including trombonist\u0026nbsp;Peter Herbolzheimer,\u0026nbsp;who in 1988 became the leader of\u0026nbsp;Germany’s National Youth\u0026nbsp;Jazz Orchestra.\u0026nbsp;Lindenberg\u0026nbsp;wrote the music and text for most of the pieces,\u0026nbsp;Frank St. Peter\u0026nbsp;scored all the arrangements. Counter to the title’s proclaiming,\u0026nbsp;\u003cem\u003eFree Jazz Goes Underground\u003c\/em\u003e, the LP offers up basic rock-jazz. Only\u0026nbsp;on the last piece,\u0026nbsp;\u003cem\u003eFlying Windmill\u003c\/em\u003e\u0026nbsp;do the horns improvise with a modern\u0026nbsp;slant and\u0026nbsp;Lyndon Berg\u0026nbsp;drums out a solo.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“When we hit the studio in 1969 to record\u0026nbsp;\u003cem\u003eFree Orbit\u003c\/em\u003e, the hippie movement was at its peak.
