For the new production of the capstan shaft for the Revox B77 MK III tape recorder, it was necessary to use and purchase a very special type of steel. Swiss Steel smelted five tons of this special steel for the manufacture of the high-precision capstan shaft.
The capstan shaft is considered the true masterpiece of the direct-drive capstan sound motor. Its tolerance is within one thousandth of a millimeter in terms of concentricity. Its manufacture requires 17 production steps alone!
